Dear Parents,
Welcome to Room 2! My name is Alyssa Devlopoulos-Handle (Ms. D) and I will
be your child’s teacher this year. Welcome back to all our returning families,
and if this is your first year with us, welcome to the Laurel Hill Family. Our
amazing teaching assistant is Crechelle Oliveira (Ms. O), and together we will
create a warm and nurturing environment and a wonderful learning
experience for your children. The toddler years are an important time in your
child’s development and we are so excited to get to experience it with them.
We can’t wait to watch them grow and explore their world!

*Please remember to send in your school paperwork and the paperwork from
this packet!
*Scholastic Book Orders are due by Friday, Sept. 22nd.
Reading- In reading, your child will be introduced to our Letter People. These
characters and their letter sounds will be reinforcing letter recognition
through the use of stories, games, and music.
The first letter person that your children will meet will be Mr. M who has a
“munching mouth.” During the next few weeks, Mr. T and his “tall teeth,” and
Mr. H with his “horrible hair,” will also be joining our class!
Social Studies- Our classroom themes will all be based on Social Studies
units. Our first two weeks will be focused on learning all about our classroom,
and how to work together with all of our friends. This will help your children
adjust to their new classroom, teachers, friends, and routine.
As we move through September, we will shift focus to the fall and all the
wonderful things that go along with it. We will be discussing all the activities
that can be done during the fall and learning about the transition of seasons.
Art- Throughout the year we will be using art activities to help reinforce our
Social Studies units. Your children will have the opportunity to create both
individual art projects, and cooperative expressive art projects throughout
the day. Since we will be using various art modalities, your children will wear
smocks during the creative process. Although we always have our smocks on,
sometimes our creativity manages to find our clothes. Although paint stains
will come out of most clothes when washed, special clothing items should
not be worn if you are concerned about paint.
Math and Science- Throughout the day, math concepts will be introduced
and reinforced through the use of games, calendar activities, counting, finger
plays, and songs. Our math program develops a deep understanding for the
foundation of math content. It also facilitates language and key terms that
will prepare the children for future success in math. Concepts that we will
begin with are rote counting, 1:1 correspondence, cardinality (how many in a
set), and written numerals. These concepts are taught through active play
and games. We will be counting up to 3 objects, arranging and counting up
to 3 objects in scattered and linear configurations, matching the numerals 1,
2, and 3 to quantities, and making a group of 3 objects to match the
numerals.
Science concepts will be introduced through various experiments and
discussions. Throughout September, we will be learning all about scientists
and how they work, as well as stepping into the role of a scientist by
completing our very own experiments. We will also be talking about our 5
senses.
Author of the Month- Each month our class will celebrate an author of the
month. We will get a chance to read many of their books and complete
activities focused on those books. If you have any favorite books written by
our special author please feel free to send it in and we will share it with our
class! The author for September will be Eric Carle!
Color and Shape of the Month- Every month we will focus on a specific color
and shape of the month. We will read stories, play games, and do special
projects that include the shape and color. For the month of September, we
will focus on the color red and the circle.
Character Counts- The character counts program emphasizes the character
traits in each of your children. We will learn about each trait through hands-
on activities, discussions, and books. Our six character traits are trust,
respect, fairness, caring, responsibility, and good citizenship. We will begin
the year speaking about our feelings and emotions.
Birthdays- Each child will be celebrated on his or her birthday. On their
special day, your child will be the leader in helping us pick songs and books
throughout the day and being the special helper. The children always love
getting their special birthday book from their friends! As we approach your
child’s birthday after the new year, I will reach out to you to discuss other
ways in which we can celebrate!
Special Days- Throughout the year we will be having several special days
that correlate to the themes we are learning about and special holidays.
These days will be listed in our monthly newsletter and be posted on our
class website and our Homeroom app.
Outdoor Classroom- Here at Laurel Hill we love our Outdoor Classroom. It
has been a wonderful addition to our school and is used in several ways
throughout the year. Some of the areas we will get to explore this year are: a
“messy materials” area, a building area, a nature art area, a climbing and
crawling area, a music and movement area, and a garden area. This
wonderful space will give us a chance to have all kinds of sensory experiences
and to expand on the concepts already being covered in the classroom. We
love being able to get outdoors for our lessons as much as possible!
Lunch and Snack- Due to allergies, our classroom will be a NUT FREE ROOM!
Please follow these instructions when packing lunch/snacks:
*If your child goes home at 12:00, please pack a snack (pretzels, goldfish, etc.)
and place it in a front pocket of your child’s backpack for quick and easy
access.
*If your child stays past 12:00, they will require a packed lunch. They will also
need a separate snack for our AM snacktime. Please pack a separate snack
(pretzels, goldfish, etc.) labeled AM snack, and place it in a front pocket of
your child’s backpack for quick and easy access.
*If your child stays past 2:00, they will also require an additional snack for
after nap time. Please pack another separate snack (pretzels, goldfish, etc.)
labeled PM snack, and place it in a front pocket of your child’s backpack for
quick and easy access.
*Please always remember to send in a filled water bottle every day! I do keep
a Brita Pitcher in the classroom for easy refills throughout the day!
