Reading: October was an exciting month for us here in Room 2! The children
met and learned about several new Letter People Friends. We met Mr. H with
his “Horrible Hair, and Miss A with her “ aaa-choo sneeze!” All of our Letter
Friends have really come alive for the children, and they love having them
join in on all of our classroom fun!
This month we will be meeting Mr. N with his “Noisy Nose” and Mr. B with his
“beautiful buttons.” Meeting and learning with our Letter People Friends is
certainly memorable, and makes letter recognition fun and exciting!
Throughout our lessons we sing songs and play games with them. We learn
about the special sounds that they make, and we practice writing their
letters. The children have really embraced this approach, and we can’t wait to
meet even more of our friends from AlphaLand!
Social Studies: In October, the children really embraced our Fall social
studies unit. We enjoyed watching the seasons change, and learning all
about fun Fall activities. We also introduced the children to Christopher
Columbus, and Halloween. In November we will be spending some time
learning about Fire Safety. We will also be immersing ourselves into our
Thanksgiving Unit. We can’t wait to learn all our special songs!
Art: In October the children completed fantastic art projects. Some were
large scale expressive projects, and some were individual projects. Many can
be seen as decorations around our classroom and throughout the hallways.
Displaying their work around the room helps give your children a sense of
ownership over the classroom, and allows them to see their progress as the
year goes on. We love being able to show off all of our hard work! This month
our projects will focus on our Social Studies themes, Fire Safety and
Thanksgiving, and our Science theme, The Human Body. We can’t wait to
show off all our creativity!
Math and Science: We’ve been really busy through the month of October!
We learned a lot about counting and are working on number recognition and
one to one correspondence. We focused on the color Orange through books
and art, and talked a lot about squares. In November we will continue to work
on our numbers through the use of games, finger plays, and songs. We will
be learning about a new shape, the rectangle, as well as a new color, brown!
Throughout October we spoke about our Farmers Market unit! We learned all
about fruits and veggies and how they grow. We loved being able to explore
the insides of some of them, and we even got to make volcanoes inside our
gourds and pumpkins-we absolutely loved it! Hands on messy learning is the
best! We also had some celery we watched grow-it’s been fun to watch the
progress throughout the month.
In November we will be learning about The Human Body. We will be learning
about how our body protects us, and how we can keep our body healthy. I am
so excited about this unit because it gives me a chance to take the tools I
used with hospitalized children when working in the hospital and adapt
them to the classroom!
Character Counts: In October we began our Character Counts program and
the children were introduced to Responsibility. In November we will be
learning about Citizenship.
Color and Shape of the Month: This month we will be focusing on the color
brown and the rectangle!
Author of the Month: In October we had a blast reading all of David
Shannon’s fun books. November’s special author will be Mercer Mayer. If you
have any special Mercer Mayer books at home, please feel free to send them
in, we would love to share them!
We are looking forward to another fun and exciting month!
