Dear Parents,
Happy December! It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and your children
continue to flourish each and every day. Ms. O and I are continually
impressed with how enthusiastic and happy they all are to be learning new
things everyday, and we cannot wait to make our way through the holiday
season with them. We ended November by saying Good-bye to our friend
Alex as his family gets ready to head off on a new adventure. This month we
are welcoming a new friend, Beckett into our class!
IMPORTANT REMINDERS!
Holiday Breaks -December 22nd-January 2nd
*Last day before break is Thursday, December 21st
*School reopens on Wednesday, January 3rd
As the weather gets colder, please remember to send your child to school
with hats, mittens/gloves, as we will be going outside as the weather permits!
**Don’t forget to label everything!!!**
***Please don’t forget to switch out your child’s extra clothes to go with the
seasons-we will send home what is in your child’s bin when we receive new
items!
Reading: November was a busy month for us here in Room 2! The children
met and learned about several new Letter People Friends. All of our Letter
Friends have really come alive for the children, and they love having them
join in on all of our classroom fun!
This month we will be continuing with Mr. Z and his “Zipping Zippers.” We
will also be meeting Mr. S and his “Super Socks!” Meeting and learning with
our Letter People Friends is certainly memorable, and makes letter
recognition fun and exciting! Throughout our lessons we sing songs and play
games with them. We learn about the special sounds that they make, and we
practice writing their letters. The children have really embraced this
approach, and we can’t wait to meet even more of our friends from
AlphaLand!
Social Studies: In December, we will be embracing the Holiday Season and
introducing the children to Hanukkah and Christmas. We will be learning
about a brief history of the holidays, traditions, symbols, and how they are
celebrated today. We have already decorated our classroom Christmas Tree,
put up the lights, and put the candles on our Menorah. We are very excited
for the holiday season!
Art: In November, the children completed wonderful works of art with Ms. O.
Some of them were sent home to you, and others are decorating our
classroom. Displaying their work around the room helps give your children a
sense of ownership over the classroom, and allows them to see their progress
as the year goes on. We love being able to show off all of our hard work! We
loved making all our Thanksgiving projects-especially our Turkeys and
Pumpkin Pies! In December we will continue on with decorating our
classroom to go along with our social studies units. We will also be
completing a lovely surprise for you for the holidays-be on the lookout!
Math and Science: We have been very busy throughout the month of
November. We are continuing to expand on our counting and number
recognition. The children have been loving working on their 1:1
correspondence in their number booklets! In December we will continue to
learn about our numbers through the use of finger plays, games, and songs.
We will be learning about a new shape-the triangle, and focusing on a new
color-blue!
In science, we focused on the Human Body throughout November. The
children loved being able to see how their body works! Our favorite lessons
were learning about our lungs and how they help us breathe, and our germ
experiment. We loved watching the “germs” run away from the soap-that’s
why washing our hands is so important!
This month, we will be transitioning into our weather unit. We will be
learning about weather conditions, clouds, and the weather cycle. We will
also be learning about different types of storms. This science unit will carry us
through January as well!
Character Counts: In October we introduced Character Counts and learned
about Responsibility. In November we spoke about Citizenship. This month,
our theme will be Generosity. To help teach this large theme, our class will be
participating in and contributing to a very special toy drive. Please refer to
the separate notice detailing how we will be able to help. To help reinforce
this concept, the children will be given the chance to engage in medical play,
something that Child Life Specialists heavily rely on when working with
children in the hospital. We are really looking forward to being able to help
support not only children who are hospitalized for the holidays, but also
underprivileged families in our area.
Color and Shape of the Month: This month we will be focusing on the color
blue and triangles.
Author of the Month: In November we had a blast reading all of Mercer
Mayer’s fun books-we love Little Critter! December’s special author will be
Jan Brett. If you have any special Jan Brett books at home, please feel free to
send them in; we would love to share them!
We are looking forward to another fun and exciting month!
We hope you have a very happy, healthy, and safe holiday, and a Happy New
Year!
