happy they are to be learning new things each and every day, and we can’t
wait to see what October has in store for us!

Reading- September was an exciting month for us. The children were
introduced to and learned about some of our Letter People Friends. We met
Mr. M with his “Munching Mouth,” and Mr. T with his “Tall Teeth! These friends
have really come alive for the children, and they have really enjoyed having
Mr. M and Mr. T join us in all of our classroom fun.
This month we will be meeting even more Letter People Friends- Mr. F with
his “Funny Feet,” Mr. H with his “Horrible Hair,” and Miss A and her “aaa-choo
sneeze.” Meeting and learning with our Letter People Friends is certainly
memorable, and makes letter recognition fun and exciting! Throughout our
lessons we sing songs and play games with them. We learn about the special
sounds that they make, and we practice writing their letters. The children
have really embraced this approach, and we can’t wait to meet even more of
our friends from AlphaLand!
Social Studies- In September the children were introduced to our classroom.
We learned about our new routine, and about all the rules we follow while we
are at school. We talked about being a good friend and about our feelings.
We also started learning about Fall, a theme that will be following us into
October. We have been reading fun stories, singing songs, and learning all
about the wonderful things that happen in the season. We will be taking
Nature Walks to find and collect colorful leaves and acorns that we will be
able to use in various ways in the classroom. We can’t wait to see the leaves
change colors as the month goes on!
This month we will be continuing with Fall. We’ll talk about apples and
pumpkins and how they grow. We are also looking forward to our apple
tasting activity! Next we will be learning about Christopher Columbus and
how he sailed the ocean blue in 1492! We will be introduced to Christopher
Columbus through stories, songs, and art projects. We will also be learning
about the Farm this month. We can’t wait to learn all about different farm
animals! As the end of the month approaches, we will be learning about
Halloween-BOO! To celebrate Halloween, we will be having our own little in
class celebration-kids only. We will be making our own costumes in class, so
please, no costumes on Halloween! A separate note with more information
is attached to this newsletter!
Art- In September the children completed fantastic art projects. Some were
sent home to you, and many can be seen as decorations around our
classroom. Displaying their work around the room helps give your children a
sense of ownership over the classroom, and allows them to see their progress
as the year goes on. We love being able to show off all of our hard work! We
hope you have enjoyed what has been sent home!
Math and Science- We’ve been really busy through the month of September!
We learned a lot about counting and are working on number recognition and
one to one correspondence. We focused on the color Red through books and
art, and talked a lot about circles. In October, we will continue to work on our
numbers through the use of games, finger plays, and songs. We will be
learning about a new shape, the square, as well as a new color, orange!
Throughout September we spoke about being a scientist! We asked
questions, made hypotheses, tested those hypotheses, and discussed our
results. Our favorite science activities this month were our sink/float
experiments and our “is it magnetic?” experiment! This month we will be
talking about the Farmer’s Market. We will learn all about farms-things we
see, how our food grows, and be introduced to healthy fruits and vegetables.
We can’t wait for all our pumpkin experiments!
Character Counts- In October we will be beginning our Character Counts
Program. The first theme the children will be introduced to is Responsibility.
We will be learning about what it means to be responsible, and how we can
practice being responsible at home and at school.
Color and Shape of the Month- This month we will be focusing on the color
orange, and the shape square.
Author of the Month- In September we had a great time reading all of Eric
Carle’s wonderful books. October’s author of the month will be David
Shannon. If you have any special David Shannon books at home, please feel
free to send them in, we love sharing them!
We are looking forward to another fun and exciting month!
