Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! We hope you all had a happy and healthy holiday season!
Ms. O and I are so happy to have the children back to school. We cannot wait
to see how much they have grown over break, and how enthusiastic they are
to be back to school! We certainly have a lot to look forward to throughout
the rest of the year!

***Please don’t forget to switch out your child’s extra clothes to go with the

Reading: So far this school year, we have met Mr. M with his “munching
mouth”, Mr. T with his “tall teeth”, Mr. F with his “funny feet”, Mr. H with his
“horrible hair”, Mr. N with his “noisey nose”, and Ms. A who says “aaaa-choo”,
and Mr. B with his “beautiful buttons,” Mr. Z with his “zipping zippers,” and
Mr. S with his “super socks.” This month we will be meeting Mr. P with his
‘pointy patches,” and Mr. D and his Delicious Donuts. All of our letter friends
have really come alive for your children, and I love how enthusiastic they are
about our reading lessons!
Social Studies: All the children have really come to love our Social Studies
units. They love reading our stories and learning all our songs that go along
with the units. This month we will be learning about the season of winter. We
will learn about famous historical figures, Martin Luther King Jr. and
President George Washington. We will also be learning about the White
House.
Art: In December, the students made wonderful and festive art projects.
Some were sent home and some are decorating our classroom and hallways.
The art collection goes along with our Social Studies unit. Some of the pieces
that the children have made were our menorahs, stars, dreidels, trees,
Santas, and other Hanukkah and Christmas projects. We hope everyone
loved the special gifts the children made for you as well! This month, the
children will begin to fill the classroom and hallways with wonderful projects
of snowflakes and snowmen, as well as some winter animals like penguins
and polar bears!
Math and Science: In math, we are continuing to expand on our counting
and number recognition. In January we will continue to learn about our
numbers through the use of finger plays, games, and songs. We will be
learning about a new shape-the diamond, and focusing on a new color-
white! We will also be learning about sorting using the terminology
small/medium/large. We will be continuing to work with our winter counting
games and using our 1-10 1:1 correspondence booklets that Ms. D made for
us.
In science, we will be continuing our unit on weather. We have already
learned about the seasons, the types of weather, and what we wear
depending on the weather. This month we will continue learning about
weather. We will be learning about weather conditions, clouds, and the
weather cycle. We will also be learning about different types of storms. We
love exploring our weather sensory bottles on our Science table!
Character Counts: In December, we learned about generosity. We learned
about giving to others that do not have much to make them feel better. This
month our theme will be fairness by teaching the children to treat others
how you want to be treated, taking turns and playing by the rules, telling the
truth, and thinking about how our actions affect others.
Color and Shape of the Month: This month we will be focusing on the color
white and diamonds.
Author of the Month: Author of the month is Marc Brown, author of the
Arthur books. If you have any books by this author, please send them in. We
love sharing them!
We’re looking forward to an exciting month and an excellent new year!
Warmly,
Ms. D
